Now that rates are heading towards zero I am thinking of going down to the dole office or whatever it is called now and registering as wanting a job.If all of the savers abandoned by this crap government do this it might put a nice spike on the unemployment figures and expedite Browns departure.I suppose there is a remote chance I might get some free money and perhaps a job.

I sympathize with you and think this would be a good strategy, except that if you have savings of above £16,000 (correct me if I'm wrong), you won't qualify for any kind of benefits and will probably receive no help at all. You will have to use up your hard-earned savings before getting any benefits.
Being prudent does not pay off. It's the skivers and over-debted who will benefit (from taxpayers' money, of course). :cool:0

My grandfather will be turning in his grave. I remember him whinging about falling rates when he was getting 11% on his halifax liquid gold account.
I would give it a try. If your close by up north, i'll even come with you!0

only works if you are retired and under retirement age though. you can register at the 'ba' (benefit agency) though, you just might not get any 'dole' but you would get your ni contributions i think0

As long as you've paid National Insurance for long enough it shouldn't matter what savings you have - you should be eligible for jobseekers (for six months) as long as you are under 60, available for full-time work, and didn't quit your job voluntarily, or if you did it was over 6 months ago.Hurrah, now I have more thankings than postings, cheers everyone!0

Really? I didn't know that. Useful to know …0

I posted a question on the benefits board last week asking if there was any good reason why I should sign on. If there was something magical that I didn't know about. Because of my savings I can't get dole money, but I wondered if there was something else, some magical passport to goodies.... they said it would be a useless form-filling exercise for me.Now that rates are heading towards zero I am thinking of going down to the dole office or whatever it is called now and registering as wanting a job.If all of the savers abandoned by this crap government do this it might put a nice spike on the unemployment figures and expedite Browns departure.I suppose there is a remote chance I might get some free money and perhaps a job.
With savings there's not even a magical passport because I wouldn't be in receipt of any benefit I'd not even get discounts etc in shops/whatever.
But yes, a spike. I'd be interested in that ... except I wouldn't ... it wouldn't do/prove anything at all. I am a jobseeker, but actually, strangely, my internet income seems to be on the up again this month I think (not checked closely after it went so low in December)... so I have self-employed earnings from that + my interest. Without that, I'd have probably just done it to be on the stats.0

For me, I'm paying a s/e stamp already though.... did wonder if there'd be any point still.0
