Hospital Calls - reduced cost number?

Hi all,
I remember a couple of years ago when I was in hospital, my husband found a telephone number that you dialled it then prompted him in put the telephone number for the hospital and it ended up being incredibly cheaper than phoning it directly.
I can't find the details of how to do it. Can anyone help?
Thanks

If you're talking about one of those 'Patientline' bedside telephone/TV systems that many NHS Trusts have been persuaded to install now, it costs about 49p per minute to call one of the bedside 070 numbers from a BT landline (don't be fooled, they may start with '07' but they're not mobile numbers - they're 'disguised premium rate' numbers and cost considerably more than calls to moble phones).
However, if you have an account with call1899.co.uk, their rates are 3p connection and then 15p/minute to such numbers.
I've not tried calling though so I cannot confirm you can get through using 1899.
According to the (beta) MSE UK CallChecker other firms* offer similar savings (again, I've not tried them so cannot confirm you can get through).
* Eight quote 15p/minute charges via 0911 501 numbers and, unlike call1899.co.uk, you don't need an account to use them.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
on 1899 you may need to use the NTL/Telewest 0208 access number rather than the 1899 prefix as I think sometimes patientline rejected calls from 1899 direct0

Hi,
Not on the 1899 you mention, is there any other such dialling number I could use without signing up for any company. It is only for a week
Thanks0 -

*Dialwise 15p/min (0911 501 46 46)
Bestminutes 15p/min (0911 501 41 41)
DiscountDial 15p/min (0911 501 75 75)
Telestunt 15p/min (0911 501 91 91)
Budgetcom 15p/min (0911 501 52 52)
Telesavers 15p/min (0911 501 61 61)
CheapestCalls 15p/min (0911 501 15 15)
They're all 'dial-through' numbers so you dial the full 0911 number and continue dialling the number you want when the voice prompts tell you to.
*The first 2 are also listed on NiftyList (which is why I've shown them first).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Is it me or have Patientline changed something. The numbers listed on their website are now 0870 numbers and not 070 numbers? Anyone know what's going on?0

Be good if it is as that will make it cheaper to call
