I got married 25 years ago, and silk flowers were just coming in. I had someone to make the bouquets and corsages, but we made the buttonholes ourselves. Just silk carnations, bit of green, silver foil, easy!

no sorry but i paid a florist to do mine and by the time we'd got from the church to reception most of them were already going brown! very upsetting when you pay a lot of money for these things the were brown before the photos!!prior to this looked lovely when they arrived they were just simple cream roses i bet you could make them with a bit of tape and folige thats all they were! good luck!

An hour before my (recent) wedding I was chopping the stems off two bunches of M&S roses (£2.99 each) and making them into a hand tied bouquet. I had loads left over so I threw together a little bouquet for my little daughter to carry, the rest went in a vase when I got home :D.

I don't know that they looked very professional (and even more so from the picture!!!) but I only carried them for about 4 minutes during the ceremony so I'm glad I hadn't spent hundreds on them.

I wasn't going to carry flowers but I realised that if I held something then my arms would not be pressed against my sides so would look slimmer as I entered the room :D

Jay Jay - thanks for posting the pic, they DO look fab...

I'm gonna have a trial run - have heaps of library books for inspiration first as am a non flower appreciating person, most of the time! I don't want to spend a fortune on flowers just because people 'expect' to see them. I do want something to 'do' with my hands though so trying a cost-cutting attempt and do my own.

    Thanks,
    Mup.

I did my own boquet, bridesmaids boquet and buttonholes on the morning of my wedding (I got married at 4pm so plenty of time)

I had a handtied Bianca rose boquet (about 40 stems) my bridesmaids had roses and sea holly (about 20 roses with about 10 -15 sea holly stems) Kept them in water until 3pm and then used a 2inch piece of wide ribbon wound round the stem and pinned in place with pearlescent headed pins and the buttonholes for the main party were a rose with silver birch leaves for the men and a rose with outfit co-ordinating ostrich feather for the ladies, didn't need any elaborate wiring, just the green florist tape, kept them in glasses of water until 2.30pm, then put them in a paper box lid on some damp kitchen paper.

I got the flowers from freshcutflowersdirect.com They do discounts for wedding flowers and Vicky is a great help (I've since used her again for my mothers wedding)

I loved doing my own, gave me something to concentrate on instead of getting nervous.

  • My mum and I made all the boquets, buttonholes and flower arrangements for my wedding and I also helped my sis in law to do hers. We got married in the winter so there was not a lot of choice I had yellow roses and Gypsophelia(SP) luckily we only had a small wedding with only one bridesmaid so it was not too much trouble. It is quite easy to wire them together if you thread florists wire the entire length of the stem we also found the florists tape was ideal to wrap around the stems once they had been wired togethr to give them some extra support.
:A If I could think of a decent signature I would use one :A

  • I would say that it is important to keep the flowers chilled, particularly if it is a summer wedding. If you can make everything the night before and then put it all in the fridge before you go to bed!spraying the flowers lightly with water first.

I would imagine you are going to be nervous enough and have enough to think about in the morning without starting flower arranging!!

The simplest kind of bouquet you could do would be a few lillies tied together with ribbon.

    Good luck with it all!!
