recommended tradespeople?

Hi,

Where is the best place to find recommended tradespeople? We would like our drive and patio work done but don't know anyone locally to us. We are near to Rochdale by the way if anyone know anyone good!

Many thanks

Never used any of them myself, but, you could try these

    http://www.ratedpeople.com/

Like to know if any of them are worth trying
  • Ring the local trading standards office and ask for some builders/groundsmens numbers, either that or federation of master builders.

as jason says try federation of master builders or trading standards, dont be afraid to ask to look at pervious examples of work.

there are loads of cowboys in the ground working sector in construction so do your research and dont hand any amount of money up from to any outfit unless its all down in writing and above board

Thanks for this information. I did look at the FMB and called a couple of people, I was surprised as they were to busy to come and do quotes!!! I am waiting for one to get back to though so fingers crossed..

If you know of anyone who has membership to Which magazine, they have a site which-local where users post their recommendations/experiences of local tradespeople.

It's by no means a guarantee but if tradesmen are busy, it's often because they are in demand due to their good workmanship so it might be worth wait?
  • I got a tradesman from ratedpeople. Initially I thought guy ok and gave him the job but it turned out he Steven Goldie, I.e. S G Roofers, Whitburn had done a botch job and left rubble lying all over the roof and did not seal roof and parts put on some fell off together with leak was worse than ever afterwards. Now I can't get hold of him and his house phone is cut off! I wonder why!!

Now speaking up for ratedpeople it is not all their fault Yes S G Roofing registered with them but it would improve if they asked for references before registering businesses. I have to put it down to being had

I have now requested an estimate from another who has a high rating and now have it and the difference is very noticeable. Previous work has to be undone and redone and work that should have been done to be done.

All I can do is pay to have done and trust that I my one bad experience is the only one.

I have been in touch with ratedpeople and they have been very nice ensuring the duff roofer knows exactly what i think of him. He's let me down but most of all he has let himself down!

Tread carefully with workmen but good ones I'm sure are out there and will understand.
