Hello everyone this is my first post so I hope you can help me with some advice
I have been with the Norwich & Peterborough for a number of years , when I joined it was a basic current account , I asked if my card could be upgraded to a a visa debit card so I could buy online and with Cheque books going out of date this was declined as i was out of work , after 6 months and in employment i asked again , this was turned down again beacuse 1 direct debit has bounced due to been payed late at work , ive just asked again this week and they have turned me down again , this time they say they have done a check on me and because i have some CCJ's dating from 2000-2 from when i was redundent they will not upgrade my card until ive paid them off , is this fair or should i appeal

It doesn't have to be 'fair', the bank doesn't have to give you a card if they don't want to. Maybe try elsewhere? No guarantees thoughKavanne
Nuns! Nuns! Reverse!

Well if there are CCJ's on your file dating back from 2000-2002 they would of fallen of. CCJ stay on your credit files for 6 years.
As Kavanne says try another bank. Barclays along with various other banks issue Visa Debit on there Basic accounts.0 -
Contact the credit reference agency and demand this data to be removed as it is past the 6 year marker - they have to remove ity by law, then re-apply for a decent current account somewhere else.Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.0

Hi. I applied to the N & P for their GOLD account. Just a cheque account with the same card you mention. My application was declined. I have a perfect credit rating and am never declined for credit applications. It took me to telephone them two weeks after I applied for the account, to ask what was happening to be told this. So for this reason, I would say they are a backward provider of financial services. And they can shove their cheque account. Ditch them is my advice (but then I am biased!!!)0

And yet they've been nothing but fantastic to me! UK based call centre, staff who know what they're talking about, no long holding queues on the phone.
Best bank I've been with! I am biased the otherway, all the other financial institutions are backward compared to the N&P!A friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future, and accepts you just the way you are.0 -
No I have to disagree. I am still waiting on my "decline" letter to find out what they managed to knock me back on. They are really bad....0

I have found out that 1 of the CCJ came out in 2004 so I have to wait until 2010:mad: before I can ask again . have tried Barclays but they have turned me down
.
I want to stay with the N&P as they are a good BS to be with just wish they would give me that damm debit card :beer:0 -

Barclays do offer a cash card account, it will probably be a visa electron, no overdraft, but you can pay for goods online with it were retailers accept it. You can't go overdrawn. So if you pay money in, use it sensibly, you can always then try upgrading with them.
But try other banks in your local town/city and see if they will give you a visa debit. Only way really to find out for sure whether you will get one or not. But it doesn't appear N&P will give you the card that you want. But you can always try and apply online see if that makes a difference, probably not but you never know.

I am lead to believe that they issue a 2 in 1 Visa Debit with the cash account now.Barclays do offer a cash card account, it will probably be a visa electronSince when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? It's hard to get a bank account with a CCJ. Try applying for a basic bank account. Refer to the link of providers on their basic bank account and facilities: http://www.moneymadeclear.fsa.gov.uk/pdfs/bank_accounts.pdf
Only Barclays and LTSB offer VISA debit cards with their basic bank accounts. HBOS and Co-operative offers Electron, Clydesdale/Yorkshire Bank offers Maestro, and RBS/Natwest offer Solo.
I assume you applied for a 'full current account' with Barclays. If so, that's why you got declined. Instead, try the Cash Card account. Don't be fooled by the name, it gives you an option of a cash card or debit card. Tick the correct box on the form.0
