New to credit cards.... help please?

Ok so i am about to get my first credit card, and am about to ask probably the most noobish question you will EVER get asked, but i am seriously stupid when it comes to all this new things.

anyways the question is as follows:

How do i pay off a credit card. I am about to get a barclycard student credit card if this makes a difference. I know you can set up a direct debit (how you do this i DON'T KNOW) but how would you be able to pay off more ?

I bank at Nationwide would i be able to pay it off there ?
could i just walk in and say heres £100 take it off the card ?
what do i do ?

You get a bill every month. It will give you the options for payment on the back.

You can post a cheque, pay by internet banking - just set up a payment on your bank account, set up a direct debit, take it into a branch if the card is associeted with a bank, or possibly by phone using a debit card.
  • You can pay it via the internet or take it to barclays or your own branch (whatever's easiest)

I'd advise immediately setting up a direct debit, just call Barclaycard and tell them what you want. This way is the ONLY way to be certain of never forgetting to make a payment/payment in time. Forgetting will cost you dearly monetarily and you'll get a bad credit history.

You'll usually be given a choice of the minimum payment or full payment to clear the balance. The choice is yours ! It will all depend on how much you spend/can afford to repay each month. If you choose the minimum you can always make additional payments via your own online banking (BACS payment) , posting a cheque to them, standing order, cash over the counter etc.

You could pay it off at Nationwide but they MAY (unlikely, but) charge you as it's not one of their own cards. Much better to pay at a Barclays branch or via internet banking.

Generally ALL (1-2 exceptions) payments except direct debits can take up to 5 working days to be recieved, therefore if you choose to pay manually remember to allow enough time before the due date.

And one even more important thing to remember. You are allocated a credit limit for a reason, DO NOT turn it into a spending target to try and reach ASAP, like some people do. Those people usually end up in serious debt.
