tesco value graded cheddar much cheaper than non grated

Value mild cheddar is £5.13 kg, but value grated mild cheddar is £3.93 per kg. I would have thought they would charge more for grating it, not less!

  • I saw something similar to this at xmas with the grated and non grated cheese. You really have to check the price per Kg now. Tesco own brand coffee is cheapest in 200g rather than the 300g jars too.

It's the same in all supermarkets, I noticed this in Lidl too.

    Yep I noticed that too.
I always check price per kg with cheese as there as so many different pack sizes.
  • the co-op are mad for this...they have a well-known brand of soup - a 150g tin is 70p and 200g tin is 69p...it really didnt make sense but i guess less is more!

This isn't the Tesco value grated cheese I tried last year though is it?

I got it home and it tasted of nothing, then read packet more closely and found it contained potato starch and was a grated cheese type product! Yuk!

If they are now doing real grated value cheese then I might try again!

Shame the value cheese doesn't taste particularly cheesy! The ready grated stuff is even worse, and dries out really quickly. They use it in my local sandwich shop, we wait until they run out and have to start using real cheese :-)

yes I agree with Tamlem- its not 'just grated cheese' it contains anti-caking agents. Even the cashier told me not to buy it (and the grated mozarella sp? because it wasn't the real stuff).

Great if you can't actually grate cheese yourself but not so good for those who prefer taste to time saving.

i,too bought the grated as it was cheaper, but i won't bother again, it tasted of nothing and it was a funny texture. Even the kids said this isn't real, it's got a powder on it.

I would never buy Tesco Value cheese in any shape or form.

It is true though that often supermarkets make the smaller tin or packet better value than the big one. I think it's because most people wont expect the smaller one to be better value so wont check. This is supermarket tactics these days - trying to trick people - you really have to keep your eyes peeled when you're shopping these days. They're out to screw you over on every aisle.
