Around here you will generally get the advice not to dabble unless you know what you are doing.
If you do a search on a term such as "trading" or "selftrade" you will find plenty of threads including some which give guidance on doing "dry-run" simulations.
Also might be interesting to watch this programme starting on BBC2 tonight
