Re:Laptop Recovery Media On The Cheap

I have a 2005 Packard Bell EasyNote R 8720 purchased from PcWorld

The System has completely crashed and I have lost the Recovery Disks for this Own Equipment Manufacturer (Oem)Windows XP Home Edition

The local pc techs want £85.00 to fix it very expensive

There is not even any personal files to be saved on this PC just a format reinstall and drivers.
I have the Windows Product Key On back of PC but I have been told if I buy XP Home Edition off Ebay there is a possibility it will not work, is this true?

I am tempted to try installing Windows XP Pro again where on the internet do I find
ALL the Drivers for a Laptop purchased in 2005 Packard Bell EasyNote R8720

I only want this laptop for browing the Net

Is Linux Umbunto user friendly using with Firefox Browser?

Thanks

It would be easier to reply if you can be a bit more specific about what is actually wrong. i.e what happens when you switch, what error messages do you see etc. It is possible to download some XP recovery files from the net whyich may get you up and running anyway.

As far as drivers are concerned Windows XP should be able to find most of them if you allow it to search online. Otherwise you can go direct to the manufacturers website, or you can use one of the driver sites (usually a small fee to join), or you can search the net for each one, just type in the key details such as model number etc. You'd be amazed at what you can find.
I restored an old pc for a friend and I found the drivers for what turned out to be a colour scanner which someone had given her 3 years before, and had just lain in the box.
  • have you tried tapping the f11 key during startup to access the hidden recovery partition
If you think nobody cares if you're alive, try missing a couple of payments.
