Options
I am looking to start downloading MP3 songs for my MP3 player instead of ripping from cd but Itunes and Amazon seem really expensive, can someone tell me if

soundike.com and legalsounds.com are legal in the uk?

And if not can someone reccomend something for me.

Thanks in advance!

Don't know about those, but these sites offer free and legal music (mostly by unsigned but still great artists)

    http://www.jamendo.com/en/

    http://music.download.com/ (compatibility probs with Firefox)

  • I would steer well clear of Soundike and Legalsounds if I were you.
They are both hosted in Russia and exist on very dodgy grounds.
itunes, hmv, amazon etc's download prices have dropped considerably recently.

I use Napster, I pay £15 a month (actually I pay 6 months a time and it works out at around £12 a month that way). I can download anything I want, as much as I want, onto up to 3 MP3 players and on one computer.

The only bad point is once you stop the subscription, unless you buy the tracks (think they are about Apple/HMV download prices) you do lose the lot- but know I download more then 2 albums per month easily, so this way I make a saving.

So with napster does that mean you have to keep subscribing to access your music even if you've downloaded it onto an mp3 player? Surely that sounds unfair!?!

Calling that a 'bad point' is something of an understatement, surely?

I really don't get this downloading nonsense at all. For example, I bought the last I Am Kloot CD 'Play Moolah Rouge' for £8.99. All nine songs in full CD quality, artwork and a Compact Disc I can play in my car or kitchen CD player. Oh, and it included a DVD with an hour-long documentary. To get the same album, with no artwork or DVD from Amazon downloads it would cost 79p per track = £7.11 and bear in mind this is for crappy, low quality MP3 files. If I want a CD to play in the car I have to make it myself, which the record industry will no doubt tell me is in violation of copyright anyway.

All for a saving of £1.88. I'll stick with buying CDs, thanks.

Yeah, its not a good thing, but to subscribe gives me the knowledge that I can download anything I want to, onto my MP3 on the day it comes out. If I have a problem, there is a normal rate number to call. Personally, its cheaper for me as I would otherwise be spending about 25 to 50 tracks per week, various artists, various albums...I don't seem to have cheap tastes. I also like to be able to look for stuff thats 10 years old or older. And listen to music in full before chosing to buy it.

I spend hours a week in a gym, music is essential to me! Napster solves the problem for me without worrying about being taken to court for illegally downloading stuff. Plus I get to her stuff I would not have otherwise have heard- they do alot of "recommended" tracks.

They are in no way perfect I could easily list whats not perfect, but the fact is, its good enough, and at £12.50 a month to download whatever I want, onto both my computer and 3 mp3 players, I'm not too bothered about perfect at the moment.

I found it cheaper to buy the Ting Tings album for £4.99 in CD format, than download it, but only paid £3 for the Prodigy album download (brilliant!)
