How long is reasonable???????

Hi, my Hotpoint Washer dryer has packed up again for the 4th time since last April, at the first repair I have taken out a new 1 year warranty, this time the machine stopped working on 17th Dec, I called them up, engineer came out on 17th Dec, couldn't fix it as he had to order new parts (as usual!!)
I have been waiting since then for them to come back to sort it, I have called numerous times and everytime they tell me they are still waiting for the part.
OH has called them up a week ago to complain, they say there is no time limit in which they have to fix things, altough the small print states that it should be repaired within a reasonable time.
When he called up, they told him they were still waiting for a part which would be sent from Italy and are expecting to receive it by 16th Jan !!!
So by the time they would come and fix it it would be around 5 weeks since it was first reported. Surely that can't be right??
I have since bought a new machine, obviously can't go that long without, we're a family of 4 with 2 toddlers, don't live close to family so can't pop round there for washing. If I took it to launderette for 5 weeks I'd probably spend the same amount as a new machine would be anyway.
OH has already told them that he isn't prepared to wait any longer, but have a feeling they won't budge.
Is there anything I can do for them to compensate/replace/refund or whatever??
Thanks isica
