Trains from Derby to Cambridge

Hi,

There's three of us who need to get to Cambridge from Derby for 10:30 on the 20th of February.

I've been searching for some time now, but can't find a reasonable price!

When I've searched for singles, it's only available at a reasonable price on the outbound leg.

Please help if you've got a few miuntes to spare, I do appreciate it!

Thanks!

    I can't find that train?

I have been using the trainline but I keep getting a £44 return price.

I found a £16 single from Nottingham, but no return journey!

Apologies, I was looking in the reverse direction. £44 is the cheapest I can see too.

    Try https://www.nationalrail.co.uk

when you do your search enter family rail card ,costs £20 but gives a third off,so your fare should be aprox £36 each return.
Dont forget your leaving early morning therefore its normally dearer.

We're not eligible for a family rail card though and would get fined and kicked off!

I'm considering using the X5 service from Beford or Milton Keynes to Cambridge and Midland Mainline down to there...

I agree with taking Midland Mainline to Bedford (singles from £6) and then X5 to Cambridge (£5 return).

... however, as it looks like most of the Midland Mainline Value Fares have sold out (except 5am from Derby ~ £10) you may need another plan.
If you do go at 5am and take X5 from Bedford the earliest you will be in Cambridge will be at 7.50am. I presume you are going on a University Open Day (am i right?) and so would allow you to have a look round the city - or is this just insanely early? Again coming back, the only decent fares are at £12 and so the total woul be £27. Let me figure out Plan B...?

I'm actually going to look round the universities and take part in a clinical trial for contact lenses that might stop the development of myopia. http://www.anglia.ac.uk/ruskin/en/home/news/archive/lenses.html

I've just spent a little longer working on it and here is the plan:

Use b_line (local Derbyshire student discount) for 50% off fares to Nottingham (£2.50 each or so). Then take train costing approx £16 each from Nottingham to Cambridge.

Then on the way back, we'll go on the X5 (looks like I can use the megabus.com website to get even cheaper fares but not the one bus I need!) and meet up in Bedford for a midland mainline train costing £12.

I think that it will cost about £35 each

It's extremely frustrating how expensive these fares are. I should be able to take the Leicester train, but it's just too expensive (or the Derby to Leicester train is at least).
