Open University - Introduction to Social Sciences

I am starting this course next month and if I remember rightly I recieved a letter with two book recommendations listed. I have lost this letter  and was wondering can anyone doing this course remember what they were? Or have you got any other recommendations of books for this course.

Thanks

I finished the course in October. One of the books I think would have been the Good Essay Writing Guide, I'm not sure about the other.

Personally I would say you don't need to buy any books - everything you'll need is in the course material.

If you go into your course page on the OU site it should list all the required reading that they suggest.

I would also say that (although I go to lectured uni study) books arent always needed to be bought.

Save yourself a little cash, if you need something you can probably google it, and failing that, try the book out at the library... If you find you use it a lot then its probably a worthy investment!
  • I would have to disagree with a couple of the comments. I started two OU courses, one in September and one in October. The books that were recommended for the course have been vital. You might save yourself some cash by not buying them but you'll most certainly be losing out. Ive been to another uni, where you could get by without the recommended reading list, but the OU is different. Get a student card and buy them second hand from amazon! If you still cant find your list phone the guys at the help desk, they're great, or log onto the OU forums, guaranteed someone on your course will be able to help. Good Luck.

Have you done or are doing the exact same course as the OP?

This OU course will be my third degree when I finally finish it in many years time and I've learnt from the other 2 not to rush out and buy books unless the tutor has written the book or constantly refers to material from the book.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

im currently doing dd100... i bought both books, and havent even used them...my tutor also said everything needed to pass the course is within the books sent to you from the OU....
  • You probably won't need them as they are only 'recommended' however I am going to buy them as I want to read them partly for personal interest. They probably also help you gain a broader knowledge of the subjects involved which is handy if you are looking to follow this all the way through to a degree.

However, as already said, you don't NEED them so it's up to you! The other book on the list is Social Sciences: The Big Issue by Kath Woodward.

Looking for that piece of info I just noted the author above is also an author of at least one of the books supplied by the OU. Maybe it's just an attempt to increase booksales

  • I'd borrow them from the library first and as another poster said, if you keep referring to them then buy them (second hand of course).

Good luck anyway, I start 3 courses in Feb.
I won't buy it if I can make or borrow it instead
  • I have been given a link to a free copy of this book you ca read online. Not sure about the rules about posting the link so PM and I'll send it to you

I'll have a look to the library first, certainly before buying any of them. Thanks all who posted.
