Recommend a Debit card for...

Hi, I would like advice on getting a debit card that I could load upfront with money and set up all my BT and Internet bills to come out of each month.

I don't like direct debits coming out of my regular account and BT and O2 won't let me pay for a year upfront. I would work out and load this debit account with enough to cover all the bills for the year.

I did see one on TV advertised that you anyone can get as its a debit card rather than a credit, so no overdraft etc

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Rosco

Nationwide offer an account called Flexaccount which includes a VISA Debit Card.

You would simply fund the account with the correct amount to cover all your expenses.

It is also excellent for foreign use because it does not charge for foreign currency transactions.

Debit cards that you can preload and do direct debits from don't exist.

Barclays Bank issue a Visa Debit Card on their Basic account, even with poor credit you can still apply, Lloyds TSB do the same.

It's much easier to cancel a direct debit than it is to cancel a continuous payment authority (reading between the lines).
  • Yes, although some companies will reinstate a direct debit if it was set up electronically

But provided there's no contract/debt owed, then the DD guarantee exists to protect you.

I do concede though, that since AUDDIS became the norm for DDI's early last year it does open you up to a greater risk.
