Can I claim my doh back off BT

Hi,

up until March last year I paid for my land line and calls through BT. I then went through 'one tel' for my calls as everything after six pm and weekends is free.

BT have STILL been charging me for a package I have not made use of since March. They knew I paid for my calls through one tel but continued to Take monthly withdrawels. I work out I have paid £60 for nothing.

I approached them and they tell me they were not allowed to stop providing the package until the customer tells them otherwise.

Surely they had an obligation to cease taking monies from a customer knowing that they were being catered for elsewhere. I feel this is robbery.

What can I do?

Toddy

Unfortunately I think BT are correct here. You should have changed to Option 1 which is their most basic package at £11pm. This would basically be line rental and your calls would have been charged by OneTel.

When I recently changed over to Onetell, BT sent me a letter saying that they were sorry I was choosing another provider for calls.Surely this ammounts to them acknowledging that the package you are on is no longer required and should be cancelled at their end?

BT are correct the responsibility is with you to downgrade your package with them if you so desire, when you CPS your calls to another supplier.

I quote from Martin MSE advice about moving your call supplier from BT.

" Ensure you’re on its basic, ‘option 1’, tariff though. I’m often staggered how many people are paying BT for a discount calls package, when they use another company to make calls!"

Sorry but I think you are stuck.

It is always up to the consumer to ensure that old or unwanted services contracts etc are properly closed.

I agree with the others - It sounds like charges for your line rental. You pay the calls to one tel but still pay the line rental to BT as they supply the physical line.

You did the MSE thing by signing up to route your calls through a CPS but you didn't do the job properly by ensuring your services from your previous supplier were cancelled (in this case, reduced to a minimum as per Martin's advice because you obviously left your landline rental with BT).

I'm afraid that's one for the 'I won't make that sort of mistake again' file.

If it's any consolation, Martin may have used your experience to formulate part of the latest update to the 'Cheapest Home Phones' article. One paragraph now reads:
You still pay BT line rental

While you pay Primus for calls you still need to pay BT £11/month (plus £1 for non-Direct Debit) line rental. Ensure you’re on its basic, ‘option 1’, tariff though. I’m often staggered how many people are paying BT for a discount calls package, when they use another company to make calls!
