Query about 'paying off' a BT contract?

I signed up to get a BT line about 9 months ago - this was to have a line actually reconnected to my (new) property. There had been a line in several years ago but it had been disconnected.
I've now decided to opt for either a talktalk or tiscali service, but I would obviously need to change providers.
I'm aware that BT will levy a charge for me cutting short their contract (Ithink it's either 12 or 18 month). I was wondering if anyone knew what it would cost to do this - pay off the BT contract early? I can't afford BT broadband and calls, and I'm assuming that it would be cheaper to pay off BT then go to another provider.
Grateful for any input.
Cheers all (and happy new year!):D

The atmosphere is currently filled with hypocrisy so thick that it could be sliced, wrapped, and sold in supermarkets for a decent price and labeled, 'Wholegrain Left-Wing, Middle-Class, Politically-Correct Organic Hypocrisy'.

Find the heading "BT Telephony Services price terms". Paragraphs 38 to 42 under "Ending the service" appear to have the information you want.0 -
You could have had a 12 month or a 18 month contract your need to check.
The charges for ceasing the line early will be the lower amount of either £70 or the total of the monthly line rental left in the minimum period. If you took a renewable contract out for inclusive 24/7 or inclusive evening and weekend calls, their will also be a charge for ceasing this early.
According to many posts on this site moving to Talk Talk or Tiscali is not a happy experience.0 -
I took out the Half price installation offer (18 month contract) 12 months ago, the contract says I must make (I think) five chargable calls a month otherwise I will be charged the other half of the cost. I have made about three chargable calls in the last six, they haven't said a word...
Saying that I would like to see them try, I haven't had a online bill for the last nine months, even though I am signed up for them. I can't wait for OTELO to finish their investigations in Febuary he he he he (laughing uncontrolably)0 -
i thought the contract was to stay with BT and pay them the line rental.
I think you can go to Talktalk but still pay BT line rental cant you?
anyways, were with Talktalk right now and although the Phone service has been excellent the broadband isnt very good at all (for us anyway). I called Talktalk to ask them if we can move the broadband side of it to another service but they said i cant as the LLU was bundled so it was all or nothing.
So i have just asked BT if we can go back to them, so i can go for O2 Broadband as Talktalk took over our line rental aswell and in some cases you have to pay BT £122 to go back to them.
Having said that BT do a 24/7 phone package which works out to be a few pence dearer than Talktalk, but with talktalk you get the broadband free (capped) and international calls free which some people will find useful.0 -

I did the same think OP - I wanted to go with talk talk but HAVE to have a BT line to get it - so had to set one up in new house.
You can pay BT line rental & call plan with talk talk, but you can't get the free 8meg broadband unless you have line rental with talktalk.
You have to go with one of the dearer options.
I ended up paying off my whole BT contract at the start & doing the whole lot with Talktalk, worked out cheaper.0 -
my advice would be to stay with bt for line rental and use an over ride e.g. 18185 for your calls .then get your broadband else where but NOT talk talk, as others have commented talk talk are useless they're customer service is next to non existant and the broadband isn't that reliable. I am speaking from personal experience. I am now with tiscali and I find very good (broadband)0
