  • As the OP said, it voids warranty removing the side.

For the love of god...NO IT DOESN'T. Why do people keep regurgitating this rubbish?

This was proven in a test case several years ago. As PCs are modular and designed to be upgraded, removing the lid does not invalidate the warranty no matter what stickers a company puts on them.

    Acer Aspire M1201
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ processor (2.30GHz, 1MB Cache)
    Vista Home premium
    1GB DDR2 667MHz memory
    320GB SATA hard drive (7200rpm)

Got it for xmas for the kids and its playing up already. Just gone to boot it up, it holds at the splash screen for a longish while, then goes to a screen that tells me there is an error on the 4th hard disk, please press any key.
    .

Have you got any USB memory sticks, a MP3 player, mobile phone, camera or the like plugged into the computer when it's starting up?

As for the slow running issue...

It'll be a combination of a new Vista install indexing the hard drive which will stop after a few days combined with all the pre-installed stuff running.

Download and run Hijack This and post the log. We can see what's starting up and suggest what to get rid of.

If it's running Norton or McAfee antivirus solutions, they also bring a system to its knees.

Are you sure removing the side will void the guarantee? PCs are supposed to be upgradeable and for this reason it is unreasonable to prevent the user opening the case. For instance Mesh and Dell machines are not sealed in this way. They only insist that in case of trouble user installed parts must be removed before troubleshooting can take place.

I also see PC world have a phone helpline scheme where they will assist the customer to find a problem and send spare parts out with fitting instructions. This could be much more convenient than a return or waiting for a service call.

I know its new but things do work loose in transit, if it was mine I think I`d have a look for loose bits before returning it.

if it's pcw, and the pc is under warranty, when you take it in for repair and ask for an extra GB of RAM whilst they've got it, they'll put it in and only charge you for the memory and not for any fitting...bonus is it will have absolutely no effect on your warranty. Did this with MIL's pc when it went in for it's "just before the 12 month's expires" healthcheck...

That definitely sounds like the way to go here! Take the PC to PCW, while they're fixing it, give tem some new RAM and ask them to put it in at the same time!

lol...why the hell not ??? I only told her to do it that way 'coz she's already paying them the £5 a month for the extended warranty and support package...she wouldn't pay it to me for me to do it for her ;)
