Think its about time all these so called energy companies (which we were told that with competition will make prices cheaper) should be scrapped and replaced with British Gas and British Electric - i for one am fed up with ridiculus price rises and then when oil etc falls to one third or less of its price - suddenly they for some reason cant reduce prices ???? So much profit for so few and the rest of the country pays. How long do we suffer? Old people not being able to keep themselves warm while the idle few in charge of these companies try and decide which luxury yacht they want to buy next. Roll on the revolution. The government answer is not to curtail their practices but to give us a winter fuel payment. Would laugh if it wasnt so sad.

No. People keep going on about the price of oil (in America...) and it's a red herring. Look at what you wrote. British GAS and British ELECTRIC. They wouldn't necessarily be able to make it any cheaper. If you want to buy your own oil and burn it, that's lots cheaper than it was this time last year, so do that!Hurrah, now I have more thankings than postings, cheers everyone!0

No, I haven't got one, but I know people in the countryside who aren't on mains gas and use heating oil, and they saw a huge rise in prices, but are now seeing it come back down again.
Long-term, even if they cut this year (which I'm sure they were going to until the Russians turned our taps off) the price of energy's going up - the North Sea will run out of gas in 10-15 years, and yes oil will get scarcer, and there'll be more competition for what energy there is from India and China.
Short of open-casting a lot of coal and poisoning everyone, our choices are limited to getting used to it, or building a lot of wind farms in a hurry (and they're not free, either).Hurrah, now I have more thankings than postings, cheers everyone!0 -

I certainly dont want to take a step back as it will not provide benefits. And for those saying that OFGEM havent got teeth, well at least a positive stepforward from their Pricing Paper at the end of last year:
http://www.ofgem.gov.uk/Pages/MoreInformation.aspx?docid=49&refer=Markets/RetMkts/ensuppro
They're consulting the industry now to implement these findings into the Supplier Obligation and addressing one of the key issues that a hell of alot of people do not switch and are stuck with the pre-de-regulated suppliers who are actually charging more in their old areas! And Gas Switiching form the old 'British Gas' is nearly non-existence in comparrison to the electric.
One thing you have to remember as the UK Market is one of the most advanced De-regulated Free Markets in the world and many countries are trying to emmulate how our market runs. Its not perfect but a hell of alot better than some sytems out there. How about a Goverment Funded one? Pay less in gas and electric bills but pay an increase in tax to support it?
Plus I doubt youll be echoing this in spring when the prices come down."Self trained industry expert who has worked in Electricty Distribution, Electricity & Gas Supply and currently works as an independent consultant in industry processes to particapants in the industry" :eek:0 -
