marriage, change of name and passport

Hi everyone

ill start from beginning.......... best place really :rotfl:

well i got divorced in and decided to change my surname via solicitor

i took my mothers maiden name (mine was bad)
and double barrelled with another name

anyway....... i am getting married in 2010, ages away but i want advice or experience from any of you.

i would like to keep my mothers maiden name and add my married surname on the end, (removing the current second name) sounds simple but im told won't be simple

as my double barrelled name is seen as one name then my married name will replace it.

If i go on honey moon with current passport as long as no issue with what ever country i go to, i am hoping to change passport later on.

what im told is when i am married i will then need to change my name by deed pol twice & ill have to change passport name twice.

1st to show everyone utilities etc i have married and gone to new name
then again to get my mothers maiden name back and including it with married name.

are you confused now ? i know i am.

has anyone else had this issue

and how did you get on travelling on passport in maiden / previous name.

sorry if i have blown your mind

and thanks in advance x

  • You don't need to change it by deed poll twice. Your marriage changes it once, then deed poll to whatever you want it to be:

When you get married, your marriage certificate will be a legal way of changing your name from krystal maiden-other to krystal married.

Then a deed poll (which you can do on the internet) will change your name from krystal married to krystal maiden-married.

Then you just send off both your marriage certificate and your deed poll certificate to whoever you need to change your name with.
PS Congratulations on upcoming marriage - 2010 will be here in no time :T
  • Thank you for that

i understand what you say all i hope is that everyone will recognise what i have done.

i want to preserve my late mothers name you see.

ill make sure i talk to the registrar to be certain it will work ok.

kinda wish i didnt change my name before now.

    thanks for you help Jenny

i think you can go by any name but for banks & anything legal you would need to change by deed poll, its good those who know you well are happy to accept you taking on your partners name.

i will re post if i find out any more

    thanks again

Alternatively, get OH to change his name by deed poll to krystalmaiden-married, then you just take his name, so you only pay once! Assuming your OH is going to go double-barrelled as well.

  • No he won't become double barrelled

but we were just chatting that 'maybe' i could change my name to include his surname after my mothers, now ! then when we marry i dont change my name !!

    maybe that will work.

Don't worry about travelling with a passport in your maiden/previous name. The issue is that you have the same name on your ticket & passport! ;) If you're going anywhere that you think appearing to be unmarried & sharing a room could be an issue then just keep some copies of your wedding certificate on you.

Marriage doesn't force you to change your name, does it? You could be married and still keep your current name - Mr Smith and Ms Jones could be a married couple.

That's right, you can keep your previous name. But a marriage certificate can be used to change your maiden name to a married name without having to do it by deed poll. It's just a way for krystal to avoid doing a deed poll twice.

Krystal, an easier way for you to do this would be for you to change your name by deed poll before you get married maybe?
  • Hi

    Just an update

I have done deed poll to change my surname to be double barrelled and include my partners name at the end so when we get married i will keep my deed poll name ! (as suggested by jenny2008)

a simple solution, thanks to everyone who helped me.

    xx
