ikea returns /replacement parts procedure?

hi
just wondered before i phone them what ikea usually do about missing/damaged parts?
i've just been trying to assemble 2 x pax malm wardrobes, and found one of the small pieces of wood has damage on the corner, and also one of the metal round things which should have a thread inside, does not have a thread and is smooth (you need to screw a bolt into it).
i live 1 hour away from ikea and the wardrobe will only fit in as estate/van which i had to borrow to get the stuff.
anyone know if ikea will replace individual parts or do they want the whole thing back boxed up? i still need to get the sliding door runners (which will fit in my own hatchback as they will fit through the front seats, whereas the wardrobe sides are too big). appreciate any experiences and will check before calling tomorrow.
thanx

Call them, I expect they'd open a box instore and swap for you there and then.
  • One of my friends had a wooden worktop that split 2 months after it was fitted, Ikea gave her a full refund without viewing or asking for the worktop back.
  • Just gone through an Ikea exchange for damaged parts. Their policy is you have to take the part back to the store and they inspect and change it for you.

Not good news for you as you will need to reborrow the van and have a two hour round trip (your time and fuel) for their defective part.;)

  • I bought two malm bedside cabinets, there was a chip in the veneer on the top of one of them. I only took the top bit back but they needed the entire unit to return as faulty. I couldn't be bothered taking the unit to pieces so bought another one there and then, then swapped the tops around, and took the new box back for a refund. All in a matter of 30 mins or so.

Having said that, its worth a call because of the size of the wardrobe.

I have always claimed petrol money back off them, they ask for your postcode and pay a set amount of money based on mileage.
  • Ikea are usually really good with exchanges ... my parents bought lots stuff from them and they had missing parts. Ikea gladly exchanged them and also gave them the petrol money as the store was 50 miles from their house.
All for saving money - new bubs due 3rd June 09.

I'd do what I did with regards to a faulty worktop - drop them an email explaining the problem and you should get a pretty prompt reply explaining the best course of action.

Do also say that bringing the whole thing back would be very inconvenient, but definitely be polite too!

They dealt with my problem very well. :)
  • I used the online system and the assistant was great, they are sending me the piece of wood and the metal thing in the post! Very good customer service.
  • Hi everyone

I've just moved house and in doing so the removal guys have seemed to of miss placed one of the runners for the sliding doors.

The wardrobe is a pax 250 wide one and I'm missing the bottom runner that the doors clip onto.

I've called Ikea and because I don't have a receipt as I brought these around 8 months ago, they said that all I can do is go to the nearest store and fingers crossed the spare parts department has one. I've been there twice already and I live 60 miles away from the nearest store, does anyone know of another solution for me getting a new runner ?

Please Help !!!! the wife isn't happy
