have bought ipod touch and need to make it my "master ipod"

I have just bought an ipod touch as my 2nd gen 20gb died on me last night.
I have 2 other ipods for my kids that run ftrom my main I tunes account.
how do I make this Touch be the "master" ipod so that my kids sit underneath it still?
Am I right in thinking that if I just plug it in it will create a sub account from the old main one?
