I've been researching my tree since September and have been using genesreunited and myheritage to get in touch with people. I maintain the tree in both as it could lead to more contacts plus I like the family photo and tagging in MyHeritage. So far I've found a few fairly close relatives that my mother vaguely remembered from childhood plus some living in West Virginia when a great uncle emigrated there around 1914. Going further back, there are some that moved to Utah around 1860.
Last night I was contacted by a relative of my sister-in-law who now lives in New Zealand and has researched her tree back to 1450!0 -
A big thanks to all who have posted.:smileyheaMagenta0

I've always found www.freebmd.org.uk really helpful. It has a great search facility for births, deaths and marriages back until 1837 and the ability to view original pages the info was transcribed from.

Hi, I've visited these links, and also spent a few hours online trying to locate some info on my mothers father. I don't have many details on him so tried to locate basic things on my mother to see if I could stem back from that... but despite having exact dates and towns and names for her nothing ever comes up on the searches - I've even tried just using her surname and sifting through the results... but nothing.
I don't really want to pay to use a site when I'm having no luck finding anything at all myself.
Any advice on what I'm doing wrong that my mothers birth and marriage are not showing as registered anywhere?
any help appreciated :
thank you0 -

I have rang the local registrars office a few times to see if they have details of family members I have been researching. They were amazingly helpful. They make a charge if you want a copy of a certificate but were happy to read the info out to me over the phone.0 -

If you would like to send me a PM with details of what you do have, I shall see whether I can find anything for you or suggest where to go to next. (I have over 20 years experience in family research)

Download free charts to help you plan
Download Free Charts to help your Research
On this page you will find some free genealogy charts to download, print out and fill in. Charts summarize your research in a visual way. They help you identify problems and plan future steps. And they are fun to fill out - use charts to get your kids or grandchildren involved in family history.
Pedigree Chart
This is our hand drawn variation of the common Pedigree Chart. Start by filling it in with yourself or your chosen ancestor on the left and then add the details of the parents, grandparents, etc., in the spaces to the right. This is your research road map, or skeleton. As you learn about your family, make sure you fill in lots of charts, every step of the way.

Family History Retrograph
This chart is more unusual. Use it to "see" the lifespans of your ancestors in the context of historical events, both local and national. The chart has ten sections across the page to cover any 100 year period you choose and boxes for local and national events in each ten year period.
In the left column put the names of the ancestors or probable ancestors; any group of individuals that you think are connected in some way. For each name draw a horizontal line for the lifespan and if you are uncertain of a date or birth or death, use dots for that end of the line. If you know the year of marriage, mark that spot on the line with a large "M". You can mark any life events you choose as long as you define your symbols at the bottom.
Now, sit back and study your visual shorthand. The new perspective will give you new ideas.

Please check back, more charts are coming soon…
