Options
hi, i have just swapped to a new isp after a lot of hassle today i finally managed to find out my connection had been changed from tesco to fastnet but now i can only connect to the net at my bt voyager configuration page by putting the number in (192.168 etc etc)I have 2 other computers in my house, both on the same wireless network which are both connecting to the net ok.I coonect my PC with an ethernet wire.Could it be my IE that is causing the problem or proxy settings? I have tried turning my firewall off and connecting but still having no joy. Thanks in advance for anyone who can help.

  • Just trying to understand what you've written, so apologies if I've got it wrong...

You have 3 computers. Let's call them PC1, 2 and 3. PC1 and PC2 connect wirelessly to your router and you can surf the internet on them without any problems.

PC3 connects via Ethernet wire, but can't see the internet. It can, however, see the configuration pages of your BT Voyager router at the http://192.168.0.1 address (those are web pages built into your router, not the internet though). At least that means connectivity between PC3 and the router is working OK.

Let us know if I've misunderstood anything. It'll also help if you tell us the model of your router and your OS (I'm guessing Windows XP).

Assuming Windows XP, do the following on PC3 for starters:

    1. Open a command prompt window (Start - Run, type in cmd and press Return) and type 'ipconfig/all' (without the quotes), press return and post the results.

    2. From the same command prompt, type 'ping www.moneysavingexpert.com' (without the quotes), press return and post the results.

    3. In Internet Explorer - Tools - Internet Options - Connections tab - Setup, and run through the New Connection Wizard. On the Network Connection Type screen, select the 'Connect to the Internet' option, then on the following screens 'Set up my connection manually' and 'Connect using a broadband connection that is always on'. Click Finish and try IE again.
  • Thanks for your time.I have just pulled the wireless network card from the laptop and connected the laptop via the ethernet cable and it worked.I also tried a new ethernet cable in the laptop first and it worked then i tried it in my main pc and still it wouldnt work.

I then tried to change the home page in internet options from tesco.net to plusnet.com pressed apply but when i open IE it tries to connect to tesco.net again.

doing as you said i get

    windows ip config

    wins proxy enabled... No

Looking at the information you've provided there's definitely something dodgy about your network configuration.

    subnet mask 255.456.789.0

This subnet mask is illegal, the maximum number is 255, you'd be expecting sensibly something like 255.255.255.0

I also note this has been assigned automatically by DHCP (which looks like your router). I suggest you try the following. Again, on a command prompt, type:

    ipconfig /release

    then

    ipconfig /renew

    then

    ipconfig /all

again and come back with the results. Also check the other computers that are working and let us know the info from there.

That's good - you've checked that the problem isn't caused by the cable.

  • It's better if you post the info in this thread and then other techies can help. The only bit which identifies you is the physical address, which is unique to every network card.

Look, here are my IP addresses: :)

    Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection
    Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-12-xx-xx-xx-xx
