Giving my laptop a static ip address

Can anyone help me with this please.
I have a netgear adsl wireless modem router and we are now using four laptops in the house including two children.
I want to use the netgear router to block access to certain sites (for my kids) and it will allow me to do this. There is also the option to specify that some computers can have unrestricted access but you have to specify the IP address.
This is fine but I think the router allocates ip addresses on a 'first come first serve' basis (?) as computers log on.
If this is the case then I need to make mine static but I'm not sure how!!
If anyone can help please?

You can do it 2 ways.
Look in the settings on your router and you can assign the MAC address from the laptop with a reserved IP address. So the laptop still behaves with DHCP, but when connected to your router it gets the same ip address. This is the preferred method, so the laptop can still operate when taken out of the house onto free wifi spots. (Then the kids are less likely to fiddle with the laptop and put it back to DHCP and override your protection!)
Or you could go into Control Panel, Network Connections.
Right click on the network icon and look at STATUS.
You will need to keep all the same IP addresses for Gateway/mask/DNS.
Then click on properties and then select IP address and change to fixed IP address.
You do have to be careful and not give it a range in the router's DHCP range. (or at least change the router's DHCP range to exclude your chosen IP address) Other wise the router may try and issue a DHCP address which matches your new fixed IP address.
So change the router to issue address only from say .10 to .20 then change the fixed ip address in the laptop to .21
Assuming your range is 192.168.1.x then the DHCP addresses will be 192.168.1.10 - 20 and the laptop 192.168.1.21.A friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future, and accepts you just the way you are.0 -
Thanks I will give these a try.I say what I like, I like what I say!0
