in Credit cards
I currently bank with HSBC and applied via my offers for their credit card. I got declined due to my credit score even thou I have a mortgage, plus account, and overdraft with them. Never missed a payment or incurred any charges.
Being a little bit cheesed off I phoned First Direct yesterday to talk about changing my current account to them and taking advantage of their £100 offer.
I spoke to a lady who ran through an application with me then said she would need to run a credit check and security check to see if/what they could offer me.
She then said good news all the checks had come back fine with no need for verification/i.d to be sent and the current account would be opened with a £500 overdraft which I could increase there and then if required. She also said she could offer me a credit card with a £6900 limit. Which I took.
She is sending me the agreement to sign and return. If HSBC and First Direct are the same company how on earth can one turn you down and one accept you with the same information or can First Direct turn me down once the agreement has been returned?

Even though first direct are ultimately owned by HSBC they are a separate banking entity. Their credit scoring may very well be different to that of HSBC, the parent company. One point though is that the agreement may be the actual 'application' in that the credit referencing agencies may be checked at that point. The 'offer' is that - an offer which may be subject to final checks prior to finally signing it off. There have been others who have been caught out like this in the past with first direct - there are some threads around about it. So in answer to your question - yes they can.0
