Silly q regarding new electric meter

Im getting a new electric meter put in on Monday (letter received from meter plus or something like that I beleive) do i need to tell my energy supplier that Im getting a new meter and how does it work with billing? Would it be better for me to take a reading on Monday before the meter is removed and input that online an then start afresh?

Thanks for any help and sorry for any confusion.

Should all happen automatically but I would definitely take meter readings on Monday AND take a note of the serial number of the old meter (should be on old bills/statements too). So long as you check your first bill/statement, you should be fine.

Your energy supplier should be fully aware of the fact the meter is being changed.

The only thing I would do would be to take a meter reading before the old meter is removed and also a note of what the new meter is reading when it's installed. I'd then just keep a record of these readings somewhere.

The supplier will send you a bill which goes up to the final reading of the old meter and will start billing you for the meter. They will be provided with all this information from meterplus (or whoever) along with information such as the meter serial number of the meter, what type of meter it is, and the necessary technical details from the meter enabling them to bill for it correctly!

The only thing you need to do is double check they do use the correct readings when you receive your next bill!

  • thank you both for the quick reply.

i will do as you suggest and take a note of both the serial number (just to be on the safe side) and the final meter reading of the old meter and the new serial number and start reading of the new meter.

also what happens when they dont need you to be there to change the meter over. how do you know the final reading is correct? thankfully they need me to access mine but was now just pondering this line of thought (what a fun saturday night im having lol)

well you'd have a good idea as you'd take a reading the day before? It won't use that many units in less than a day!

In my experience they ask you to be in anyway, as they need to check that your electricity or gas supply is correctly working afterwards.
