They dont really change your bandwidth - what they do is during the peak hours (under their FUP) they regroup you in with all the other high bandwidth users in your immeditate local area using Tiscali. Therefore you would in theory notice a slowdown in download speeds. At off-peak times you should in theory be unaffected.

I dont want to lose the speed - so until my contract runs out I limit any big file downloads to overnight i.e. Lost Season 2 - this way everything is downloaded while I sleep and is ready the next day. Plus the wife is happy Im not on the computer all the time.

funnily tiscali dont seem to mine me using dc++ but any others such as morphues they go crazy over. i agree with the person below you (sorry forgot name at time of writing) that the customer service is dreadfull! the chap i got was looking for a way to put the phone down.. i my raised voice slightly and this was taken as abuse to staff..

bob would you use tiscali after this???? i will never go with a company like this again even if it costs more....

Having problems today as our speed has ground to a halt. Internet is unusable. I rang CS 3 times and was told I should have done 3 speed tests. Did six - (all slower than the slowest dial-up) and rang back. Exlpained everything again. Told I'd probably got a virus - run checker and it should sort everything out. I asked what would happen if it wasn't my problem and was told it would take 7-10 days to sort out. Should I ring you with my virus result? No. How will you know you've got a problem then? Don't worry, we are sorting it out now.?!?

OH rang later and went through similar series of questions. They sent him a idiots guide to broadband with a list of things to check - even though we'd already done all that. Rang back and latest is that they will escalate the problem and it will be sorted in 72 hours. Not holding my breath.

Thanks for listening, I feel better now!

PS: Couldn't understand half of what was said due to accents of CS guys and had to pay on 0870 number for priveledge of them repeating everything twice.

  • Are you running BitTorrent? This P2P type of software helpfully leaves your PC open for others to download stuff off your machine - namely stuff you or the O/H or kids may have downloaded. It is normally this type of activity that the ISPs are putting restrictions on in peak hours. If BitTorrent is running then check what has been dowloaded and is being shared with the rest of the internet world - if it is illegal or copyrighted material you could get into trouble.

Lewt - yes I would use them as other than this stupid FUP when I'm on their top price scheme "unlimited" hahaha I've only ever had one problem (fault at the exchange) which was sorted out in 48 hours and I was kept informed 3 times a day on the progress.

BitTorrent only downloads from the folder you download too. I'm very security conscious and only store sensitive infomation on a removable device anyway. They shouldnt restrict anything in peak hours when you are paying for an "unlimited" service. That is my big gripe with Tiscali.

Don't think so but will double check ( how do I find out?)

Everything seems to be back to normal today so guess they fixed the problem.

    Thanks

I would like to rephrase this question.

If you are unhappy with Tiscali then who will you be switching to?
How much more do they cost and why is it worth it?

I am about to sign up and need options, not 'Tiscali are rubbish' replies. I need 2Mb/s minimum and an 'unlimited' option.
  • Silent_Bob - that is the point - I have read elsewhere (can't remember where) that for Tiscali and other ISPs they view BitTorrent and P2P traffic as they type of traffic that goes beyond fair use. When the ISPs set up their networks all they expected was for people to browse the web and download email - all of a sudden the network hogging applications have come along - like P2P, filesharing and it is causing bottlenecks in peak hours. Those people who want to just browse and send email are now suffering slow responses in peak hours.

Expect to see more publicity on these types of issues - but I think the ISPs will still have their way and will have to be more careful with their advertising.
