Hi,
My little girl is 3 in a few days, and I am getting stressed about her birthday cake!! I feel like I want to (ought to?) make it myself but I'm not that good at cakes. Has anyone any suggestions for an easy-ish cake for a little girl? To be honest to please her the appearance is probably more important than the taste!!
Also, any suggestions for party activities/food? I've not done one before!! It's only going to be about 4 children but I'm getting nervous about it!
Thanks

I am doing one for DD1 - shes 15 in a few days! LOL
If you are not that good with cakes, why not just stick to a simple sponge cake? I am doing one with green icing on the top and covered in hundredsnthousands. http://www.be-ro.com/recipe/showrec.asp?rec=78 - this one is so easy! I know its a nice idea to do a fancy thing. You could buy ready made icing and colours in a set. I did this a few years ago and put a clown on the sponge cake as the template was already in the icing colours box!
You could always buy a ready made cake? If you dont cook cakes that often you wont have the ingredients and a smaller cake may work out cheaper pre-made??
Simple plain sandwiches, cooked chicken nuggets, crisps and bananas. Kind of covers most kids. Keep the fruit juice as weak as possible - you dont want to overdo the e-numbers and have a small crowd of hyper kids!
If they are only 3, have you thought about ballons and boxes??? I promise that it will keep them amused for hours.
You could also have a princess theme? All the girls have to dress like a princess?0 -
There are several threads on birthdays - but the one in the link below is the best one for you:-

qiuck and easy!
makes 4 smiles,
1 red apple cored and sliced into eighths,
a squeeze of lemon juice,
smooth peanut butter,
minature marshmallows
spread peanut butter onto one side of each apple slice(squeeze a little lemon juice over the aplle if not serving immediatly).place 4 minature m/mallows on 1 apple slice then lay another splle slice peanut butter side down on top!!!!
they are fantastic looking, like giant versions of the teeth and gums we used to get at the penny sweet shop!!!0 -
I always remember the 'best' birthday cake my mum made me was a fairy castle. It looked so spectacular, but all it was was a square sponge with a whole swiss role stood on it's end on each corner (to make turrets). The whole thing was iced pale pink, and the tops of the turrets were decorated with doilies (sp??) curved into cone shapes to make the pointy roofs. It was BEAUTIFUL!!
Does that sound easy enough yet spectacular enough to please a 3yo??I'd rather be a could-be if I cannot be an are; because a could-be is a maybe who is reaching for a star. I'd rather be a has-been than a might-have-been, by far; for a might have-been has never been, but a has was once an are – Milton Berle0 -
How about a "barbie" cake?
Cook the sponge in a pudding bowl, plunge a barbie or similar looking doll in the top, drape ready rolled icing round the doll and the "skirt" and stick silver balls or similar to decorate.Squares knitted for my throw ~ 90 (yes!!! I have finally finished it :rotfl: )Squares made for my patchwork quilt ~ 80 (only the "actual" quilting to do now :rotfl:)0 -

I was about to suggest that. It works really well i did it for my daughters 4th birthday and it went doen really well :j0 -
Children mainly care about icing. Make a chocolate cake, ice the top then completely cover it in smarties - a fantastic effect and also covers up wonky baking.Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

I made my daughter a chocolate cake, covered in chocolate icing(you could use any other type of cake and icing) then bought loads of sweets (sweet necklaces, marshmallows, haribo etc) and just put it all on top, i was very popular with the children at her party when they saw cake and sweets!!!!

You could also make little piggy fairy cakes!
Make some fairy cakes, roll out some pink coloured ready roll icing, cut out with a biscuit cutter and put on the top of the cakes. Using pink marshmallows, cut one in half to get a smaller circle shape for the nose and the rest of the other half in half again for the ears, assemble on the cake. Using writing icing pipe on two eyes, two dots on the nose and using red liquorice strands, a little smile...
I've made these for a party before and all the kids (and mum's) rave about them!!
My daughter's 7 now and doesn't want a traditional party anymore (it's all swimming, bear factory, tobogganing etc) boo hoo! I LOVED every minute of preparing everything for her parties!!
Let's think, what else.... Oh I know miniature hedgehog cakes. Make fairy cakes, cover with chocolate buttercream, sprinkle on crushed up flake bars and use chocolate buttons for eyes etc.Squares knitted for my throw ~ 90 (yes!!! I have finally finished it :rotfl: )Squares made for my patchwork quilt ~ 80 (only the "actual" quilting to do now :rotfl:)0
