Real player

Wanted to watch a video on BBC on-line news, also link in to Greater Manchester Radio, and seems I have to download a player from Real.com

Sure I've read on this site some, ah, less than flattering comments about Real (tried to search site but must be doing something wrong).

Is my memory correct, or is this a different Real? (Or a different site I was on??)

One of the video clips was about internet / computer malware, which, bearing in mind what I seem to recall reading about real......... makes me a bit dubious about downloading it.

this is the only thread I remember about realplayer (luckily still in my bookmarks)

I held out for a long time but eventually decided to get the latest realplayer. I've done everything to ensure it can't 'phone home' like setting my software firewall and router firewall.

The spyware-free early versions available at oldversion.com work with 99% of sites (including BBC) - though it nags you constantly to upgrade.

I only got the latest version because I REALLY needed it for something

(I think it was Realplayer 8 I had until recently - Very light and works for almost everything)

Thanks for that - info was just what I was after (and I was a bit worried I might need a memory upgrade)

Jeez, it isn't only me that can't sleep!  Thanks, I'll look it up - (later) in the morning!!  No other, alternative, players suitable?
  • There's something out there called "real alternative" that allows you to avoid real player. Sorry no links though I guess a quick google search would find it.

I've used it on a laptop which is too old to handle RealPlayer. Works fine.

Free Codecs also has a 'lite' version of Media Player for those with speed challenged machines.

  • I use Media Player Classic, an open source alternative to RM. Works fine with BBC streams and downloads.

Got this info from the site blinky recommended, seems the Media Player Classic is included!

    Real Alternative 1.29
    Updated: 5 Nov 2004 | 5.63MB | Downloads: 812588

Real Alternative will allow you to play RealMedia files without having to install RealPlayer/RealOne Player.

You do need a player that is capable of playing RealMedia. The included Media Player Classic supports it and works very well. Supported: RealAudio (.ra .rpm), RealMedia (.rm .ram .rmvb .rpx .smi .smil), RealText (.rt), ReadPix (.rp), RealMedia embedded in webpages.

    Thanks guys.
