Insurance when buying 2nd car. Help?!

Hi I hope this doesn't sound like I am dense but I have just passed my test and am going to buy a car on Ebay. Its from a private seller. How do I go about getting car insurance? Do I buy it before I set out to buy the car or do I have to phone them after I buy the car? Help??!
I don't want to buy the insurance and then find the car is a wreck and not want to buy it. I have got a couple of quotes and have saved the cheapest but don't want to drive the car home with no insurance so I can get on the computer to buy the insurance. If you see what I mean.
Basically how do you buy car insurance online for a car you haven't brought yet?
Thanks in advance for your help on this.

  • I think you should always buy the insurance after you've seen/test driven the car but before you actually collect the car to take it home.

You can choose the date you want the insurance to start, so simply choose the date that you collect the car.

    Hope this helps

other idea is you can take out a day cover from places like tempcover for example cost like £10 - £20 per day. If you are happy with the car, you can get it home under that insurance (and supposely tax it as well) and can than take out a year contract. If not happy and do not buy the car, only lost the £10 - £20 insurance premium. But have not risk driving with no insurance or a big cancellation fee.
  • you can usually arrange "temporary vehicle cover" with your existing insurer - no need to go to a different company. just ring them and explain and they will cover you for the test drive and from memory charge between say £10 and £20 depending on the type of car

If you don't have your own policy then you can do this on the policy of a family member maybe? just make sure you explain clearly to the insurer and you should be ok.

    Hope this helps:money:

Best thing to do is to find a friend / family member that has Drive Other Cars Cover on their insurance. It's really not worth insuring a car for the year, just in case you get there and the car's falling apart. The cancellation fee alone on some of these policies can be upwards of £50, so you may be pressured to buy a car that isn't as described, to save this additional expense.

As for temporary cover, most (e.g. dayinsure), need you to be over 21 and have held your licence for at least a year, so I doubt that'll be possible, as the OP said that s/he had only just passed their test.

:rotfl: :rotfl: Are you suggesting that someone drives a car before they have organised the insurance on it?? I sure as hell know that I wouldn't, and its unlikely that an Ebayer has traders insurance!

I agree wholeheartedly if you are buying a car from a dealer, but this thread was about a first timers (so no 3rd party cover on existing insurance) buying from Ebay.

this is potentially bad and costly advice if the car you are buying is of decent value. "Drive other cars" is only 3rd party only cover, so wouldn't cover the actual new car for damages to itself

    need to be careful ;)

Thanks for your advice on this but my dad is the only person I know with a car and he lives in London so his insurance is already sky high without adding extra cars/people to. Also as mentioned I only have just passed my test and this is my first car. I have e-mailed a few insurance companies and none have got back to me depsite getting quotes from them. My limit for the car is £1k so third party is all I need. There is no way I am driving it without insurance so I think may have to either get the insurance and hope for the best or pay a bit more for a car from a trader.
