Credit Card Fraud Problem

Hi i wonder if anyone can help.

The problem is this.... A flatmate used my card without my consent and i reported it as fraud

I have been using my credit card with no problems, then one day i saw a transaction that i know that i did not do. I immediately contacted my credit card company and said this is fraud.. they cancelled the card and refunded my money and said they will investigate. They sent a new card... and started to investigate

After about 6 weeks they tell me they have reason to believe that i made the transaction they say that they have details such as name address and importantly an ip address which points to my address

I was confused and said how can that be??? I finally after a lot of questioning of the people living at my flat found out that someone HAD used it for gambling sites!!! I was stunned and angry

Now the credit card company are saying that i will need to go to the police to get a crime reference number and report this as credit card fraud. They said i must do this or i will have to pay the full £4000 amount

I am unsure what to do as i found out someone did use my card without my consent and only owned up after i reported the fraud

What shall i do???

Hope someone can help i am very worried

If you blame your flatmate than clearly this is a case for the police do deal with in the first place. Contact the police ASAP. I am very surprised that you haven't done this yet ...

I don't see what the problem is either - report the fraud to the police. Reading between the lines ....... you don't want to get your flatmate into trouble. You aren't - they got themselves into this trouble by using another person's card to run up debt they didn't intend to pay or even own up to.

Your choice is to pay the £ 4,000.00 if you want to protect them ..... or get out of a debt that isn't yours by letting them take the consequences of their own actions.

They aren't much of a friend imho.

Your choice is clear - it's either you shop your flat'mate' or you pay it yourself.

I'd definitely go to the polce - you can always get another flatmate and if you don't report them then they will probably do it to someone else.

If they've ripped you off like this then what else are they capable of?

Go to the police right now. Why should this scum steal £4000 from you and get away with it?!
  • Does your flatmate have access to £4000??
I would give him a week to cough up and if it has not been completely repaid then I would go to the police.
A partial or promise is no good - full payment or nothing!

You should report this to the police.
But it would help if you could narrow it down, there seem to be more than one other person living at your flat(?).
    Money in longest works hardest
  • Agreeing with everyone else. It sounds like your flatmate really is real scum (so why worry about them) or more likely they have a very serious problem which needs addressing NOW. A wake-up call by the police when all they owe is you (presumiably their friend as well as flatmate) £4000 has got to be better that waiting until they owe ten times as much to loan sharks and worse. Seriously, you will be doing them a favour if you do the right thing now. Definately cruel to be kind, and however hard it might be to dob them in, you are being far more of a friend doing it than covering for them.

Am I right you are talking about £4000 here? What kind of question is that?

If you want your money go to the police. If you are rich and don't care then don't.

I somehow doubt you flatmate will pay you back if you leave it or they would have owned up in the first place.

    I simply state the obvious.

    1) Recongise in no uncertain terms anyone who abuses your trust and misuses your cc for £4k in your name ISNT your friend.

    2) Recognise that if you dont go to the cops, youre "complicit" in the fraud yourself as far as barclaycard are concerned, and may suffer the consequences longafter.

    3) You have absolutely no way out - you simply must go to the cops AND get rid of this scum.
