Which Sony MP3?

Can anyone tell me which one is the better player? Or advise me which one to get?

Sorry I cannot give you a more specific answer to your question but I got the first one ( NWZ-639FB) from Amazon just before Christmas and I think its really excellent.

There is a comprehensive "expert" review of it on the Trusted Reviews website (look up google) and lots of consumer "mini-reviews" on the Amazon site. Have a look and they will provide a lot of opinion and comment - mostly favourable but sometimes critical.

I don't know anything about the other mp3 you mention but it will have to be fantastic to beat the NWZ-639FB. And I would bet it doesn't !!

It depends on what your priority is.

The 639 has support for BBC iplayer and an FM radio.

The 729 has a slightly more detailed sound which makes it easier to listen to for extended periods.

I think both can be used with Napster To Go.

I went for the 729 as the sound improvement did it for me but there is a revised model due out "soon" which is iplayer compatible but with the sound of the 729.

Why bother with Sony - the iPod Touch is the market leader.

(I try and avoid Sony, as they tried to renege on the Warranty of a TFT screen some years ago, and I don't trust them.)

Sony players kill the touch for SQ! If you are a fter great SQ than Sony is the player! The new Touchscreen Sony player showed at CES looks lovely with that OLED Screen.

Get a Sansa Clip! Fantastic SQ for such a tiny cheap little player.

Depends what you are after in a MP3 player though.

Why bother with an iPod? Both the Sonys are excellent and beat iPod for sound quality- as does a £30 Sansa Clip.

The A 729 player looks to be an older model.

I have one of the latest S players and sound and picture quality is great and good value too compared to iPods. Out of the 2 you quote I'd get the S639.

Thanks for the replies, i`ve decided to go with the S639. Plus Sony player beat Ipods hands down for sound quality!

That's easy to say, but I'm willing to bet you would be unable to tell the difference between the two with a decent set of earphones.

All these people who say this and that beats the iPod "hands down" might get a shock if they tried telling the difference between the two without knowing which is which.

I've been forced to get an Ipod as it is the only player that offers full integration with my car. For quality listening though it is the Sony which comes out.

Sony tried to produce an Ipod beater with the 7 and 8 series players by undercutting on price and offering superior SQ. People still chose the Ipod. Sony then reduced production costs and made a couple of compromises on SQ with the 6 series but the feature list is incredible. Apple will still outsell the Sony because there is more to a music player than just how it sounds.

You've made a good choice though with the 639.

What I mean is, the earphones that come with the iPod are absolutely awful. A decent set of earphones used on both levels the playing field, and it's very hard to tell the difference between players.

I'm always amused at players blowing the iPod away when any difference there is would be (a) very very small and (b) totally subjective. The most important factor in sound is the quality of headphones used.

But it's whatever. My 2nd Gen iPod Touch and Shure SE530s sound pretty good to me.
