Insurance cover for a few weeks?

I needed some insurance cover for a couple of weeks and wanted to know if anyone knew any specialist providers in this area?

What if I take a full 12 month policy and cancel after a few weeks - is that a really expensive way of doing it or does it work pro-rata?

Is there any policies that have a cooling off period and provided I don't make an claims I could cancel and it not have cost me a penny?

You can cancel any insurance before 14 days, and get all your money back. Then if you need more cover open again with another insurer, go for one who is cheaper so at least you can say you are changing for a cheaper policy.

To anyone who thinks this is underhand:

    1, It is not illegal
2, if the insurance companies did what they used to and provide pro rata refunds with no penalties, people would not feel so inclined to do this. Companies I knew a few years ago would provide pro rata refunds, now do pro rata refunds and a penalty of one months premium. It is simply not right imo to do this to the customer, so doing the 14 day cancellation route is imo justified fighting back.

But if you have a bump in the 14 days and you have to claim then you will not get your refund. And if you are photographed by a speed camera, during this period, you may find it a bit of a difficult situation should the need arise to prove you were insured.

The insurance company might waive your cover for the 14 days but I don't see how the courts can find against you for no insurance given that you legally were covered for the period. It might be covered somewhere in law, but the insurer who I cancelled with before 14days certainly made it clear that in cancelling I am making myself "uninsured for the period" and she mentioned speed cameras, maybe she was just trying to scare me into not cancelling, but I was having none of it.
  • Thanks wig, I'm hoping that nothing happens in the 14 days but obviously if does I am covered and won't be able to get a refund but at least my mind will be at rest.
