Seems BG have been sending out letters to people saying they haven't payed their bill and details have been passed onto EOS debt collectors. Phoned up and lots have been sent out by mistake.

Disregard the letter but to make sure here's a British Gas freephone number

  • What has actually happened is a load of debt has been sold on that has been outstanding for over two years. This dates back to when British Gas used older systems. The debt collection agency that has bought the debt were supposed to release demands in stages.. however because of the credit crunch n all.. they have released a load at once, putting pressure on there call centres, and phone lines going to a standstill, and also a huge increase of number of calls to British Gas.

The debt has all been confirmed as legitamate, albeit the occasional errors you may get with any account. The problem is that as the bills go back several years, they are bills from the old systems BG used to use. Most agents that answer the phones dont have access to these systems, and wouldnt even know how to navigate around them... therefore you may just get told "sorry... there is a mistake, ignore it" As the accounts wont even show up in the systems that we currently use.

Ask for information off the final bill I.E.. What is the final reading?? If the person you are speaking to can answer these questions, then you are speaking to someone who knows what they are talking about, if not you need to be pressing to speak to a more experienced advisor, or a manager.

    Hope this helps.
