Has my router been hacked?

I've just been experiencing problems with my router (netgear WGT624v3), neither my laptop or PC could connect to it, even though it had full strength. Then both laptop & PC couldnt find that network or any other. Suddenly they found a network called S**t face (with the ** replaced by hi, obviously).
I am running a virus check, as of yet nothing found. I've also run disk clean up, deleted all cookies etc.
When we turned the router off, then on again the problem disappeared (for now, touch wood) & we could reconnect to the router.
Anyone know what happened? Can anyone offer any advice to prevent it happening again? My network has wpa-personal security type & tkip encryption type.

I am not an expert on this at all, but could it be that this new s,face network is on the same channel as you so it causing you problems connecting to your own.
Like I said no expert, so please feel free to tell me I am wrong..“Careful. We don't want to learn from this.”0 -
If yours is encrypted, and it worked after you turned it off/on, and isn't called sh itface now, it can't be yours.0

As has been said it could have been someone elses network and just a coincidence you had problems at the same time, but just in case have you changed the default password for your NetGear router/access point, I seem to remember netgears have a default password for the web administration console of something along the lines of 'admin'/'password'0 -
yup, I dont use the default password etc for obvious reasons, but I've changed it all again just incaseYou cant take a step forward with both feet on the ground0

Change the channel it's on. I tend to find a lot of stuff uses the same channels. Channel 13 seems to be quite quiet but 1,6,10 and 11 seem to be very popular.Conor
