Help for a train journey please - cheapest option?

Hi all,
I realise this is too far in advance to book yet, but I'm looking for cheap options using similar dates.
On Tuesday 14th April, two adults (one with a 16-25 railcard) will need to travel from Doncaster to Milton Keynes Central.
We will return on Thursday 16th April.
The cheapest option I've found so far is:
Doncaster to Tamworth return: £49.80
Tamworth to Milton Keynes return: £21.45
TOTAL: £71.25 (£35.62 each)
I considered going Doncaster to Manchester and then getting a direct train to MK from there. The good news is that I can get us both to Manchester for just £8.30 each - an amazingly cheap fare.
The problem here is that Manchester to MK seems to be £80+ in total, thus making it more expensive.
Have Virgin stopped doing their cheap fares on the West Coast Main Line?
A third option was Doncaster to London on the East Coast Main Line and then up to Milton Keynes.
This may be an option.
Any help would be great - thanks!
