Hi Everyone,
I have just had an e-mail from Asda confirming that they take Visa Electron cards for Internet Grocery shopping - so thats sainsburys and asda that want our money!! I'm waiting on a reply from Tesco's but I suspect they will still refuse us, I will let you know when they reply,

Tesco doesn't. I keep asking! Something to do with the signature? Doesn't make sense. They need to wake up though.. With the credit crunch and bankruptcies rising, they are missing potential customers.

If its down to signature thats a new excuse as there party line used to be that the reason they dont take Visa Electron for online shopping is that Visa Electron card are issued to 16-18 year olds and they will not deliver because they could order alcohol. Nope it dont make any sense to me either as they could just do what Asda do and say that the person accepting the order my be of age to purchase the alcohol.
In my mind and as someone who has become a massive Smartprice fan i would stick with Asda anyway.:cheesy: K2nga :cheesy:

Neither of those excuses hold water otherwise Sainsburys and Asda would refuse us! I will wait for their reply, and might pass it on to Moneybox(Radio 4) or Watchdog (BBC1) see if they fancy taking it up for us! I do love a good argument even if I don't win in the end! I'll keep you informed as to Tesco's reply,

I wonder if this may be down to the fact that some retailers operate a system whereby they can only take Electron if the card is presented and "swiped" through their terminals, as a lot of Electron cards don't allow customer not present transactions. I dont know if that is the case with Tesco but a company I worked for wouldn't accept Electron for any mail order transactions but could if you went into the store. Perhaps its down to the agreements they sign with their merchants?0

Similar situation with the council I work for. They weren't allowed to accept Electron payments online for council tax payments at the direction of the bank. They managed to argue the case and it doesn't happen now, but it caused them some grief to start with - something about there being no guarantee the money was there or something

From what I've read it seems to be the opposite. The money has to be there and it is checked before transaction goes through. There was some long winded thread on the banking board all about electron cards and that banks were going to phase them out (phase them to what I have no idea but it got me worried).Merry_Gentry wrote: »something about there being no guarantee the money was there or something

Hiya
Just a word of caution re: Asda and Co-op Visa Electron.
I use this successfully every month for a 'big' shop. I don't know whether this is down to my local store, or whether it's Asda in general but the following happens every month...
I do the internet shop, the provisional amount is, say £175. Asda 'reserve' this amount on my Electron account.
On the day of delivery Asda debit the 'actual' amount, say £169. BUT they haven't been clearing the original £175...so a week later, when I try to get cash out, I can't.
The advisor at the coop each time has deleted the original 'reserve' amount to correct it and said its something to do with Asda/Electron.
I suppose I should take this up with Asda, but while the Co-op have been so good, I haven't bothered.
Bit of a pain, but at least they accept Electron!
