Cheapest way to print digital photos?

What is the cheapest way to print digital photos?
IS it best to do it yourself with good quality ink and photo paper or is it to get some company to print them for you?
Where is the best place to get someone to print them?
Where is the best place to get ink and paper from?

Anyhelp would be great as we have just had a baby and relatives are very keen to see some photos of her!!

A colleagie who does a bit of professional photography recommed https://www.photobox.co.uk.

You can upload your photos into an album, then share the album via an email to your rellys. Advantage here is you are only uploading the photos to the web once, and your rellys (who may not have broadband) dont have to download massive files. You can then purchase prints online and can crop and resize a bit to get the desired photo.

I also noticed last night you can share them to anyone via the TV using NTL boxes, anyone with an ntl can use the interactive type in your personal number & pin and see the pics on their tv.

I always shy away from printing yourself - such a faf !
  • I print my own, just easier and more covenient - not sure how cost works out though.

I have an Epson Stylus R300 (Good quality photos)
Epson paper (from PC World £4.99 for 50 sheets)
Epson compatible Ink (Takes 6 carts I pay around £1 each locally)

    Hope this helps
  • I work as a photographer, though most of my work is only published electronically. My own private family snaps I take to Jessops, the quality of their digital printing onto photographic paper is very good. I wouldn't bother doing your own, unless your requirement is not too demanding.

    I use https://www.snapfish.com.

They were the cheapest I found. Quality of the prints was really good too.

Plus they are forever sending through offers, at the moment there is an offer for 1p prints (put "penny" in the code box when ordering I think)

Having them printed professionally works out much cheaper than trying to print them yourself.

I think this is pretty much the received wisdom when you are talking about standard 6x4 prints - it's cheaper to get them printed in a shop or an online service. Here's an article from Personal Computer World from April 2005 which quotes some costs per 6x4 print using 3 popular (?) makes of home printers when you take into account costs of paper and ink (but not the cost of the printer itself):
    Epson PictureMate: 25p per print
HP Photosmart 375: 26p per print
    Canon DS700: 78p per print

This doesn't compare well against the cost on the high street where you can expect to pay more like 10-15p per print at, for example, Asda. Online, there are often good (=free or pay p&p only) introductory offers which bring the cost down even more - here's a website which lists the introductory offers for some of the main online services. For at least some of these, you can qualify as a new customer by simply registering with a different email address - not that I would suggest for a moment that anybody should do something so dishonest...

However, if you need to print larger photos, eg, up to A4, then I did read somewhere that it starts becoming cheaper to print at home. I can't find any info for the UK so don't take my word for it though...

I used snapfish last week through pigsback - various pigsback points, 20 free prints when you sign up (99p delivery so worked out at 5 p per print) - would use again as very fast, efficient and all the uploading was very easy.
