Resetting USB Port

Happy New Year Everyone!

Once in the distant past I damaged a Memory Card by simply removing it from my multi-card reader built into a 3.5 inch bay and attached to the motherboard by cable. I was told you can do this using XP or Vista. Now people tell me you should always 'Safely Remove' or 'Eject' blah blah blah. Anyway, please don't reply to the previous comment as I know there are a lot of opinions out there. All I know is I broke a card when I removed it without ejecting or whatever.

The question is....

When I 'safely remove' a card placed in the card reader, the related drives for that device disappear from 'my computer'. If I want to read a card again I need to reboot, not even a logoff and logon make the drives reappear. Is there a method of mounting the multi-card reader (drives D: E: F: G: if you like) again and make them usable without having to switch off the PC? Something in device manager for instance?

Appreaciate your replies as ever guys.
 Can anyone explain to me how to put a signature here?

    Personally I WOULDNT 'safely remove'
Id just make sure the card isnt being read or wrote to and that its not in explorer and take it out. You cant possibly damage it, if its not being 'used' in any way.

if you wish to try, just uninstall the device in device manager and the operating system will reinstall it (Which does sometimes fix problems of this nature)

    Windows delayed write fail!
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

The safely remove option simply ensures that any data cached is written to the disk and is supposed to give you a message confirming this has been done, if the data has corrupted in memory it will then be written to disk, any problem there is nothing to do with this option. but not using this option without disabling write caching on removeable disks means data can be lost.
When you say the drive does not reappear, i assume you mean even if the card is removed and then re-inserted?, this will be a driver problem or a fault on the reader.

Seriously. I'd put it in a friends laptop, was about to pull it out, then he said use Safely remove hardware, so I did. Lost a lot of photo's- altthough I don't think they were important.
