HP laserjet printing problem - help needed

I have an HP laserjet 1600 colour laser printer that has just started playing up. The problem is that all prints are missing the first 30-40mm or print on the left hand side of each document. There is something there, but it is extremely faded.

I have tried recalibrating the printer, all toners are present and have a huge amount of supplies. In addition, I have cleaned the black rotating plasticky thing visible when you open the front door.

Other than that I am clueless and would appreciate any advice. The printer has done very little work, has been fitted with 4 new toners and a wireless printing gizmo, so basically has cost me a fair bit of dosh – so I am quite keen to get it working properly again.

Ta.

Are you absolutely sure that nothing has got trapped at/in the left-hand side of the printer? (Open all the flaps, look with a torch, etc).

What sort of warranty did you get with it, and how old is it?
  • Have you ever printed labels?

A stray portion of label stuck somewhere is often the culprit in this situation.

    Hi

Thanks for all the replies. To answer:-

The printer is over two years old and so is out of warranty
There are no flaps to lift up or cubbyholes for something to get trapped in
I do print labels, but specialist one-per-page jobbies - none have gone missing!
    I have no error lights

    Any other thoughts at all?

Sod's Law: as soon as a problem occurs, the warranty has run out; nearly always the case LOL. Does the printer come with a manual (it might be on cd-rom instead); it might be worth having a quick look in the 'Troubleshooting' section.

Have you tried printing with all of the colours down the left side of the page or is it just the black ink you have used? I ask because this sounds like a toner problem. Are they original HP toners or are they cheap alternatives. HP laser printers don't like cheap alternatives, and in my experience the non HP ones are rubbish.

One thing you can try with the toner is to take it out, keeping it upright, and shake it left to right a few times. This will loosen up the toner powder and may help.
  • Can you try printing the same thing in black only and then in colour and see if it's happening to everything you print, or just to things you print in black?

The link in my post above seems to be intermittantly playing up, so alternatively you can go to http://welcome.hp.com/country/uk/en/welcome.html and type your printer into the search box to get links to manuals, drivers, etc...
