After spending ages searching for a quick and easy way of doing this I have found that the National Grid have launched a new service to get a quote and book a job:
http://www.nationalgrid.com/uk/Gas/Connections/
The site has a online quote/book facility, as well as a method to get competitive quotes from interested independent contractors.
After getting a quote earlier this year for £3000 each for four new meters from British Gas New Connections (why has this company got a bad rep again?), I was pleasantly surprised to get a quote of £600 from National Grid for each new supply. I understand I have to get the meters installed by a supplier separately, it still will work out at fraction of the price.
I have read somewhere that the National Grid has a contractual obligation to provide for free upto 12 meters of pipework, so this may be part of the reason they are much cheaper.

I always tell the truth. Even when I lie.
