Please forgive what I'm sure is a pitifully stupid question...
Exactly what software comes with a basic Dell laptop (Inspiron 1300) if you don't ask for anything on top (ie I made sure all the options were included in the initial price and not add ons)? I have worked out it comes with Windows XP but does this mean it will have Word and Excel or will I have to buy this software?
Thanks

So you get XP home and MS Works, everything else is extra, Word and Excel are not included. BTW the works wordprocessor and spreadsheet is not compatable with word and excel. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Thanks
- looks like I can get the software cheaper buy buying it through work than adding it on with Dell.

So just to check - if I buy "Microsoft® Office Professional Edition 2003 (Home Use Program)" software package, will it be able to run ok on this laptop?0

Don't forget all that spyware Dell build into their PCs these days.
[In case you are wondering ... no, that's not a joke. I don't joke.]0 -
Should be no problem with MS office.
I'd go for at least 512Mb of RAM though. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Penrhyn - why?
Thanks0 -
512mb of RAM is just enough memory for a Modern PC these days the
less the RAM the slower the PC will respond.. very frustrating at times
especially when using image software.0 -
I am on an extremely tight budget at the moment - will I be able to get away with less? I will largely be using it for Word and Excel, and very occasionally downloading photos from my digicam to crop/resize but that's not as important as being able to use Word.0

You could get away with it then upgrade at a later date..
