Student nurse bursary - can anyone help me with how income will affect it?

I get the student nurse basic bursary, which is nonmeans tested, plus two additional allowances and the childcare allowance (all of which are)
I'm barely making ends meet and could really do with getting a job on top, but I'm worried that as I work, the additional allowances and childcare allowance will go down. (My childcare is 900 a month so I really can't have that allowance affected)
Also, if I do bank/agency work, this isn't regular so how do I inform the bursary people?

Money earned through part-time work while you are a student doesn't impact on your student funding at all.0

Is that definitely on my NHS childcare bursary though? It's meanstested0

I got this (although I'm in Wales so it may be slightly different) but I was told I could earn as much as I liked (though declared it to CTC - I did 1 to 2 shifts a weeks so under 16 hours and told them that which they were happy with) but if my PARTNER earned they'd take it off (presumably if it's means tested on parental income then it would have been parents rather than partner0

The means test doesn't include money earned whilst you are a student.0

I wish someone had told me this when I started the course! Granted I'm not sure how I'm going to fit work in too but something will have to give.
Thank you both0 -
have you thought about going part time? although your bursary will then be pro rata of 60-75% depending on how many hours you are working.
you can then work in your days off and if you work 16 hours per week you will be eligible for working tax credits too.
speak to your uni as its maybe a way forward without actually giving up altogether.
good luck0 -
Hi ya love,
I'm a nurse, I've been throught the whole student bursary malarky. I dont have children but loads of the girls I trained with did. We all worked part time to bump up our income and non of us had our bursarys adjusted or ammended because of it. Even the girls with the kids continued to get the same money.
I think the rules are that any extra work makes your bursary taxable as you now have a second income and obviously affects the means tested nature of the children subsidies - BUT - this didnt happen to any of us.
The best work was to sign on at the local hospital staff bank as a healthcare assistant and that not only helped the nursing but was flexiable and usually was decent pay esp weekends and bank holidays.
Definitely definitely definitely none of us got penalised for this work.
Hope you figure it out and all the best for the rest of your training.

just a thought, have you applied for tax credis ( not the child care part ) as your bursary is not classed as a tax income. Good luckx0

you dont actually get taxed on your bursary at all its not considered an income as its a non-taxable allowance. you would only get taxed if you earned over your taxable allowance of ?£6500.... regardless of whether you got a bursary or not or whther you were a student or not... which is great as its unlikely any student would be ever able to fit in enough hours to earn more than that... but you can probably ear 200-300 a month doing extra bank shifts.

its important though not to do too much extra work as its very tiring. most students do extra shifts at the weekends when they are in uni.
btw your own personal income is not counted as income for means testing purposes either only those that you live with.
check out the NHS student bursary guide for more info...
