Car Insurance And Legal Expenses Cover

I am trying to find a reasonable car insurance quote for my daughter and one option to reduce costs is to leave out a few optional extras. One option is the legal expenses. It will be fully comp cover, does she really need this extra?? Does anyone else not bother with it?? Has anyone got it and used it successfully??

Just some input from others would be appreciated..

Thanks

  • A lot of people do not bother with legal expenses cover but, in my personal view, it is worthwhile having at least one insurance policy that includes legal cover. It is often available when taking out buildings insurance, so if she has that already, she may well have a legal cover policy already.

I think it is worthwhile, not only because it is relatively cheap - £20-25 in my experience - but because it can come in handy if she's involved in an accident, in which case it can be indispensable to have professional legal assistance should she need to pursue a personal injury or other accident-related claim. Also, many such policies provide legal assistance if you have, for example, an employment-related dispute (eg having to take a claim through the employment tribunal for unfair dismissal, redundancy, discrimination). So, to get such legal assistance for £20-25 is, in my view, worthwhile.

Sorry this reply is a bit late, but yes, legal expenses cover is definitely worth having, and you can obtain a policy that covers the whole family in respect of any legal expenses incurred (not just motoring) at no cost. Like all legal expenses policies you are limited to using services of a specific firm of solicitors (and their barristers if required). Mark Thompson Law solicitors have realised the benefits of not charging for a policy which means you will use their services if you have a claim. They issue the policy under the trading name of Your Key; for more details visit: http://www.yourkey.info/become-a-member

I have been a member for two years now, and whilst I have not used their services for a claim they have been able to provide advice on such things as the most cost effective and appropriate roadside recovery services to meet my multi-vehicle needs.
  • I have it on my home insurance despite being a solicitor myself. It is invaluable in my opinion although with car insurance, not so necessary. Some insurers include it for free - call up and haggle with them and try and get it included for free.
