Claim for payment 16 months after the event?

I got a letter yesterday from a holiday company claiming that a payment for more than £1000 which I made in Sep 2007 wasn't processed correctly and that I have to pay it now. I paid the payment over the phone and was told it had gone through.
Can they really do this? I could well do without having to stump up £1000 right now.

Then you'll have to pay it. I'm surprised you didn't notice it not appearing on your statement.0

Have to pay it? Or what? I'm sure the OP noticed fine well the money wasn't taken and they've lived with it fine up to now.
At the best I'd want to come to an agreement and the worst I'd give them nothing. If they can't run their business properly they shouldn't be doing business.
All depends how much energy you have, whether you want hassle or don't mind them sending letters etc.0 -
The company are legally entitled to claim payment if they can prove the money is still owed.
Pay it and don't shirk your responsibilty, maybe even ask for a payment plan with them, otherwise you might find yourself with a few extra charges from the court or a debt collection agency maybe. Then just think of the trouble you'll have when nobody wants to give you credit for 6 years !0
