AMEX PLatinum card - refunding fraudulent transactions

Hi
Please could someone advise on this, it just seemed strange procedure to me.
Someone got hold of my amex details and used the card fraudulently. I reported it, put a block on it, etc, etc. All OK.
I pay the full amount by dd monthly. Got a letter from AMEX saying that they would credit my account for the fraudulent amount. As I've only just got my bank statement, I noticed that whilst the full amount (including the fraudulent amount) came out of my bank account, the credit mentioned in their letter had not been credited to my bank account, but simply appeared on my AMEX statement. Phoned them and asked how does that give me my money back?
Shouldn't they have either taken the full amount inc the frauds (as they had done) from my bank account and then credited my bank account with the fraudulent amount, or simply done it in one transaction by deducting the fraudulent amount from the overall amount?
Guy I spoke to kept saying, I see what you're saying, and at first said that they might not be able to credit my bank account, spoke with someone else and said it would be done but will take another 5-7 working days! Meantime, I've been out of pocket - I thought my bank balance wasn't right.
Is this standard procedure? If I hadn't checked my bank statement I might not have found out. Thanks in advance for any help.
