For example some router firewalls whilst stopping unsolicited connection can actually deny the attack but by doing so they actually alert the attacker to the presence of something at that IP address.
Not if you stealth all ports using NAT/DMZ on the router.

That's sort of my point. You know what you are talking about (and what to check / change). As with many things in life you can't just assume that because you have a firewall you are protected - you no what 'assume' makes
