  • I was contacted last year by EMC. It turned out that I had a case for a mis-sold endowment policy in the early 1990s and after a few weeks I got a cheque for £2100. They made it very simple, I just had to complete a couple of forms and they did all the rest, making all the phone calls and everything was reply-paid so it didn't cost me a penny. If you are in the same boat do it before its too late.

You got an endowment complaint from a case sold in the early 90s looked at and settled in a couple of weeks? Sorry. I don't believe you.

Over 3/4 of endowments are timebarred from complaint now. It is a bit late for most people.

Most CMCs (claims management companies) do not, in my view, give value for money - and on a money saving forum, that's an important point.

Sorry to pick on you willowspuppy, but I really don't think that you are the sort of person who would benefit from the service they offer. You're right, CMCs do profit from people's laziness - but it's really no harder to pursue a complaint yourself than through a CMC.

You could just ring the Financial Ombudsman Service - which is free to consumers - on 0300 123 9 123, and tell them you'd like to make a complaint to your bank about PPI but you don't know where to start. They'll pass the complaint on to your bank for you, or give you the correct contact details for the bank's complaint department if you want to write a letter yourself. You don't need to say anything more than "My name is X, I live at Y address, and I think bank Z mis-sold PPI to me".

The bank might ask you for information, particularly things like your policy number and the time you took out the policy - but its the same information that they'd ask for if EMC was dealing with your complaint, and ultimately it's you and not EMC that's going to have to provide it.

The one place where I think CMCs can be useful is that they sometimes have an idea of when a business is just trying to fob a consumer off - and then the CMC knows to take the case to FOS rather than just lie down. However - the FOS complaint form isn't exactly complicated, if you do have any trouble with it FOS will help you, and FOS is perfectly capable of giving an opinion as to whether or not you're being fobbed off.

EMC, to be fair to them, are certainly not the worst of the bunch. They don't demand money up front, and whilst I personally have no time for them I've never caught them doing anything dishonest.

Other CMCs however...I've came across several cases where the CMC demanded £500 up front to deal with PPI claims, promising that the £500 would be refunded in the event of a successful claim. The CMC then went bust, taking all the £500s with it. The worst of it was that in the cases I saw the consumer hadn't even taken out PPI in the first place, and there is no way that any CMC can get you a refund of premiums that you never paid.

Seeing as I started this thread, I thought I had better post our results.

We started our claim with EMC, and after 11 months we had our answer. We ended up with just over £1600, after EMC's fee was taken out. I have to say, I was extremely pleased with the way everything was handled.

In the event of a failure, a trained engineer is dispatched to the our site unless the problem can be resolved remotely. So far we are very happy with the service. They are professional engineers, punctual and really helpfull.

We know spammers are a pain in the neck but you managed to be particularly stupid at the same time. Still, anyone reading this will know never to touch Primenet UK because if they are this stupid with their unauthorised spamming, what are they going to be like in the services they provide.

  • I thought I would tag a further question about EMC onto this thread. My partner has been contacted by them offering her their services in reclaiming monies she has paid in credit card payment protection insurance. Reading the above thread it looks like they take a good chunk of any money that has been successfully reclaimed, my partner attitude is if they manage to reclaim something it's money that has long since been forgotten about. The only thing that worries her is that the credit card company may blacklist her in some form if her claim is successful. She has got the forms from EMC but has not signed anything yet. In their (EMC) blurb they say that ""No, taking back what is your money anyway will not affect your credit rating". Has anyone had of experience of EMC with this sort of claim? Thanks.
  • Hi,

We have received this response from EMC:

    "Hi JuanDavienarey,
If you have any concerns regarding the service which we offer, you can contact our compliance department direct on 01803 697541 and one of us will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have about the process, service we offer and/or our terms and conditions.

    Kind regards,

    Lewis Harvey – Compliance Manager"

dunstonh you are obviously biased against not only EMC but with the fact that people are successfully making claims against companies who sold people endowment policies that they had no business sellling. And to say you dont believe someone when they tell you they successfully claimed is a bit arrogant and very condescending.
You keep stating its too late and this post is from 2009, today is 19 July 2010 and I recieved a cheque last thursday from Bradford & Bingley which EMC successfully negotiated for me as I was mis sold an endowment policy in the early 90's.
Are you going to call me a liar too as I will prove it if I have to. As far as I am concerned, I would never have had a penny if it wasnt for EMC claiming on my behalf so anything to me is an achievement.
For the reord, I was mis-sold an endowment policy through an independant financial adviser (like yourself) when I was 21 years old, the policy was more of a ife insurance which I did not need as I had no dependants and was single.
I have the letter from B & B in front of me admitting they were wrong, and although I cashed in the endowment last year, I still recieved a cheque from them for £4995. EMC are asking me for £1748 in fees and I am more than happy to pay this as I would not have a penny if it were not for them.
So stop telling people it is too late as it obviously is not too late and I am the proof!
It sounds to me that you are geting a bit panicky, being an 'independant financial adviser' yourself, how many people did you persuade to take a policy that was never going to cover what they would eventually owe the bank? Hmmm
I have read your posts and it looks to me like you are doing your best to put people off claiming, you certainly are not providing any advice that is of any help.
DONT LISTEN TO THIS MAN, HE IS A FINANCIAL ADVISER. IT IS HIS NECK ON THE LINE SO OBVIOUSLY HE IS BIASED AGAINST PEOPLE CLAIMING MONEY THEY ARE ENTITLED TO.
IT IS NOT TOO LATE AND WHAT HAVE YOU GOT TO LOSE?
YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF YET YOU PROUDLY STATE YOU ARE AN 'INDEPENDANT FINANIAL ADVISER'
You are meant to be trying to help people yet you just accuse them of spamming or telling lies!
    Very proffessional - NOT!

The point is you could have made this claim without EMC's assistance and would not have had to pay them almost £1750 in fees for a few minutes work.
