Computer automatically connecting to Internet

Since last week, when I installed the free Open Office software, my computer once started up is automatically connecting to the Internet which I do not want. When I installed the software I needed to install updated Java and it seems to be a Java icon appearing on my toolbar when it is connecting to the Internet.

Any ideas as to how I disable this, many thanks

Most likely java calling home for updates,
click Start - Settings - Control Panel - Java - Update - Check for Updates Automatically, uncheck this button.
    Chelski wherever you may be

Or you could always let it update...
  • if your using dialup, just out of interest is it connecting to the right dialup and not a dialup trojon, was just a thought

as mentioned its no doubt java wanting to update

    I hope your computers 'secure'
There are literally millions of 'dialers' in existence (programs that 'dial out' from your computer and could generally cost the earth)
True story ~ My grandfather got one years ago. hed left it running some app and went shopping.
Came back and switched it off (nothing unusual). Next thing a 650 quid bill (!) came from BT
His computer had dialed out and accessed a 'premium line'
He had to pay as they were threatening court action
