"Spybot - Search & Destroy (sometimes known as Spybot-S&D) is a malware, spyware and adware removal program for Microsoft Windows. Like most malware scanners, Spybot-S&D scans the computer hard disk and/or RAM for malicious software." - Quote, Wikipedia.
Simply put, it's a program for removing any malicious programs that may have infected your PC from surfing the web. Note that most anti-virus scanners don't detect and pick up these malicious programs, hence the need for this seperate bit of software. The program scans for such things as keyloggers, spyware and other programs which may put passwords, credit card numbers, and other vulnerable data at risk online.
The program is free and I would recommend downloading and using it, together with Ad-aware Personal edition and Microsoft Anti-Spyware, again both free programs. The reason for using 3 different bits of software is that one program may pick up an infection that another program cannot detect.0 -
If I were you I would simply get "hitman pro" which combines a number of anti-spyware programs into one. Best free software out there!
NB this doesn't contain the microsoft program so you may still want to download that one seperately.0 -

I haven't kept up with developments on Hitman so maybe it's improved or changed for the better in some ways.
